By Shell plc, the multinational oil and gas company, announced on Tuesday that it has resumed oil production at the Penguins oil field in the UK North Sea.
This restart was made possible by the deployment of a new floating, production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) facility.
The FPSO vessel allows for the processing, storage, and offloading of oil directly at the offshore field, streamlining the production process and enabling Shell to continue extracting oil from the Penguins field.
Transformation of the oilfield
The oilfield’s export route will be significantly transformed, Reuters quoted Shell in a report.
Previously, the oil was exported through the Brent Charlie platform. However, Brent Charlie ceased production in 2021 and is currently in the process of being decommissioned.
To address this change, a new Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel has been introduced.
This new FPSO will not only serve as the updated export route but also brings substantial environmental benefits.
It is expected to reduce operational emissions by a notable 30% and extend the Brent field’s operational lifespan by up to 20 years, as announced by Shell in an official statement.
UK’s reliance on energy imports
In the current energy landscape, the UK finds itself heavily reliant on imports to satisfy a significant portion of its domestic oil and gas requirements.
This dependence on external sources for energy security has been highlighted by Zoe Yujnovich, Shell’s integrated gas and upstream director.
This statement underscores the strategic challenge faced by the UK in ensuring a stable and consistent energy supply, as fluctuations in global markets and geopolitical tensions can impact the availability and affordability of imported oil and gas.

Production to peak
This approach aligns with the growing emphasis on sustainable practices within the energy sector, ensuring a reliable energy supply while minimizing negative impacts on the environment.
Shell also announced that peak production from the Penguins oil field is projected to reach approximately 45,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
Additionally, the company stated that the Penguins field currently holds an estimated discovered recoverable resource volume of roughly 100 million barrels of oil equivalent.
The multinational oil and gas company also reported that the gas produced by the Penguins field annually would be sufficient to heat approximately 700,000 homes in the UK.
